💔 A Disheartening Act of Vandalism at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 308

It is with great sadness that we share something that happened at our Legion this past weekend.

Sometime between Saturday, August 1st after 8:00 p.m. and early Monday morning, one or more individuals vandalized both of our outdoor communication boards. Numerous letters and numbers were removed, and our signs were deliberately rearranged to display vulgar and offensive language.

This was the first thing our Walking Club members saw Monday morning. They were shocked and saddened, and it was deeply embarrassing for our Legion and our community.

What many people may not realize is that these sign letters aren’t just plastic pieces—they’re expensive to replace. We had 56 letters and numbers stolen, each costing $2.99 plus tax, and we had only recently purchased new replacement characters.

As a non-profit organization, every dollar we spend replacing stolen items is a dollar that can’t be used where it truly belongs—supporting our veterans, their families, local youth, community programs, and charitable causes.

The people responsible may have thought this was just a prank.

It wasn’t.

The ones who ultimately pay the price are the veterans and the community members we proudly serve.

If, by chance, anyone comes across these missing letters or numbers anywhere around the Town of Durham—whether in a park, ditch, roadside, trail, or any other location—we would be so grateful if you could collect them and return them to the Legion. Even recovering a few of them would help reduce the cost of replacing what was taken.

We are also asking for our community’s help.

If you live near the Legion, were walking or driving by during that time, or have a home or business security camera that may have captured any suspicious activity between Saturday evening and early Monday morning, we would be incredibly grateful if you could come forward.

This incident has been reported to the West Grey Police Service, and no piece of information is too small. Even the smallest detail could help with the investigation.

❤️ If you’re unable to help with information, you can still make a difference by sharing this post. The more people who see it, the greater the chance someone may remember seeing something—or may come across the missing letters.

Thank you to our wonderful community for your continued kindness, support, and for standing beside your Legion. Your generosity allows us to continue giving back to our veterans and our community, and we know that together we can overcome this unfortunate act.
