There's a pocket of the Island where it rarely freezes, the summers run warm, and the growing season stretches long enough to ripen wine grapes. Canada's only maritime Mediterranean climate, and it's right here in the Cowichan Valley.

That's why more than a dozen wineries have set up between Duncan and the lake, growing Pinot Gris, Ortega, Bacchus, and Pinot Noir. People call it the Napa of the North, which undersells how much it feels like its own thing.

Make a day of it. String together two or three tasting rooms, stop at a farm stand, grab lunch, and you've got one of the better slow days the Island offers.
