This is what your union dues pay for.

CUPE Alberta is emailing its members telling them how to vote in the October 19 referendum: NO on questions 1 through 9, REMAIN on question 10. There's no "here are both sides," and no "make up your own mind." Just instructions.

Think about who's paying for it. Albertans in unionized workplaces are required by law to pay dues. Those dues are now funding a campaign that calls anyone who disagrees a scapegoater. If you're a CUPE member voting YES, you're paying for the ads attacking you.

It would be one thing if unions laid out both sides and trusted their members to decide. That isn't what's happening here. What's happening is a union using money it collects by law to push its members toward one political outcome.

Almost a year ago, I sent Premier Danielle Smith , (along with every UCP MLA, and CA president,) two recommendations that would have stopped this. These would have also given the teachers EXACTLY what the AFL and ATA were asking for- their rights:

1. Separate professional associations from unions. When one body acts as both your professional association and your bargaining agent, as the teachers' union does, the conflict of interest is built in. Workers lose an independent voice for their profession.

2. Protect every Albertan's freedom to choose what they associate with and fund. No one should be forced by law to bankroll an organization that campaigns against their own political views.

Neither has happened yet. Posts like this one show why both are needed.

Read the whole email. Then decide for yourself. That's more than CUPE is offering its members.
