Schultüten - an old German tradition… and one that is worth keeping alive all over the world.

It is also called a Zuckertüte, it is a large, decorated cardboard cone filled with treats and school supplies that German children receive on their very first day of school. The tradition began around 1810 in Saxony and Thuringia to make the big transition to first grade feel fun and exciting instead of scary.

The Legend: Long ago, parents told their children a special story. They said there was a magical Schultüten-Baum (school-cone tree) growing in the school garden or classroom.
Picking the Fruit: The story went that school could only start when the paper cones on the tree grew big and ripe.
The Real Reveal: Parents or godparents would actually bring the named cones to the school and hang them on a special display or branch. The children would then "harvest" their own cone on day one.
