Fresh Ontario cauliflower from Bernier Farms alongside these gorgeous spaghetti squash from Sunny Nature Farm; two local Ontario farms growing some seriously good produce right now.

Local, seasonal and grown not too far down the road. Just the way we like it.

We cracked open one of our watermelons for a little quality control, and while it was almost there, we figure the crop still needs about another week to hit that perfect peak ripeness we’re looking for before putting them out for sale.

The chickens, however, have considerably lower standards. 😂

Apparently “not quite ready for the farm market” translates directly to ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT WATERMELON BUFFET in the chicken coop.

Nothing going to waste around here… and judging by the feeding frenzy, there are absolutely no complaints from the cleanup crew. 🍉🐔

Some things come and go… but our Sliced Preserved Peaches have been one of our best sellers for as long as we can remember; at least 40 years and counting. ❤️

We make them the same way we always have: using beautiful Ontario peaches, prepared during peach season when the fruit is at its peak ripeness, sweetness and flavour.

It’s our way of taking one of the best tastes of an Ontario summer and putting it in a jar so you can enjoy it long after peach season has disappeared.

Open a jar in the middle of winter and suddenly September doesn’t seem quite so far away. 🍑

Simple. Local. Seasonal. And apparently, after 40+ years, still pretty darn hard to beat.

It’s September, which means we have to start talking about that dreaded six-letter word… WINTER. 😫❄️

This week, three brand-new shelters were built for the animals as we continue getting everything ready for the colder months ahead.

We may not be ready for winter, but we’re making darn sure the animals are! 😂 Our goal is to have everyone snug as a bug in a rug when the snow starts flying.

Perhaps the happiest of all will be Fernando, who has been technically “homeless” all summer. 😂 Don’t worry… he’s had plenty of places to get out of the weather, but now the big guy can finally say he has a roof of his own.

Next up… getting these shelters bedded down, decorated? and ready for winter.

The first Ontario apples have arrived at the market, fresh from Goldsmith’s in Thornbury, Ontario, and we’re kicking things off with three early-season varieties: Zestar, Bliss and Sunrise.

If you’re wondering which one to grab… here’s the quick rundown:

🍎 Zestar — Crisp, juicy and a little tangy with a nice balance of sweet and tart. If you like an apple with some zip to it, start here.

🍏 Bliss — Sweet, crisp and easy eating. A great snacking apple if you lean toward the sweeter side and don’t want a lot of tartness.

🍎 Sunrise — Juicy, aromatic and sweet with just enough tartness to keep things interesting. A really nice all-around early-season apple.

One of my favourite things about Ontario apple season is how much the selection changes as we move through fall. These early varieties are just the beginning. Before long, we’ll have a whole lineup of Ontario apples rolling through the market.

For now, Zestar, Bliss and Sunrise are here. 🍎

Fresh from Thornbury. Grown in Ontario. And officially one more sign that fall isn’t very far away. 🇨🇦

This morning the chickens got their hands… errr, beaks… on some fresh zucchini, and judging by the feeding frenzy, I’d say it received a solid 10/10.

One of the things I love about growing our own food is that very little ever has to go to waste. The beautiful stuff heads to the market, and anything that’s oversized, damaged or just not quite pretty enough can still find a very enthusiastic audience out in the pasture.

And these girls are NOT picky critics. 😂

Fresh zucchini for breakfast, bugs for lunch, and probably a little dirt for dessert. Just another morning on the farm. ❤️

There are worse places to spend a rainy, gloomy afternoon. ❤️🌧️

Fresh straw went down in the shelter today, and apparently Melissa and her BFF Linnhe needed to test it out together.

I’m not sure who enjoys these little visits more… Linnhe, or Melissa. There’s definitely something pretty special about sitting in a pile of fresh straw with a Highland cow who’s perfectly happy to have you there. 🥰🐮

Not every farm day needs sunshine.

Pulled pork and MUSTARD, you say?! 👀

Yep. And before you question it… trust the process!

Today’s Food Hut food review features a gluten-free pulled pork sandwich, piled high with all the toppings and finished with the secret ingredient that somehow ties the whole thing together perfectly… mustard.

Smoky, saucy pulled pork, fresh toppings, that little tangy kick from the mustard… it just works. And judging by the review, this might be one of those combinations you didn’t know you needed until now.

Available from the Food Hut — and yes, we can make it gluten-free!
