SPRING SUPER GLUE CHALLENGE
Hello from Kelly at Think Turtle Conservation Initiative
We are calling on our turtle friends and supporters to help ensure Ontario's turtle hospital has the supplies it needs to care for injured turtles during the busiest months of turtle season.
Did you know Ontario's turtle hospital relies on two specific adhesives, LePage Gel Control Super Glue and LePage Ultra Gel Control Super Glue, to help repair fractured turtle shells?
The Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre (OTCC) has reached out to Think Turtle to let us know they are running low on this essential medical supply just as turtle season begins to ramp up.
To help stock the turtle hospital with this important product, Think Turtle has launched the Spring Super Glue Challenge with a goal of raising $917.88 to purchase 84 bottles.
Thanks to a generous discount offered by Bancroft Home Hardware, if we purchase all 84 bottles through them, we can secure the adhesive at a reduced cost and help stretch every donation further. Their support will help ensure the turtle hospital can stock up before potential supply shortages and price increases occur.
Note: The glue is not used anywhere near the wound. The glue is "not" used on wounds nor does not come into contact with the fracture itself. It is only used to secure the temporary tape that is used at first, to stabilize the fracture pieces, a small amount is used on each end of the tape that traverses the fracture site. It is used as part of a veterinary procedure that helps repair damaged shells and gives injured turtles a chance to recover and eventually return to the wild.
The turtle hospital needs to have this essential product readily available. It is expensive and can sometimes be difficult to source in large quantities. A small 4 ml bottle typically costs between $11.73 and $13.99 plus HST.
At Walmart, where the product is often available at the lowest price, it is frequently out of stock. Online retailers such as Amazon also place limits on the quantity that can be purchased. LePage manufacturers have previously donated some bottles but, for legal reasons, will not endorse the product for this use. As a result, further donations are no longer available.
HOW TO CONTRIBUTE
A contribution of $10, or any amount you can give, will help us move closer to our goal and ensure injured turtles receive the care they need.
Contributions can be made via e-transfer to [email protected], by cheque, or by cash at the Think Turtle office in L'Amable if you are in the Bancroft area.
