BEFORE THE DIAMONDS,THERE WAS BEEF

When BMC was established on 24 December 1965, Botswana was on the threshold of independence. BMC's own history states that in the early years of the country's development, beef exports were its only foreign-exchange earner.
That means Botswana's beef industry was not simply an agricultural activity. It was an early export engine. Historical IMF data from the period shows the scale of the livestock economy: in 1965, recorded cattle offtake was over 162,000 head, including slaughter and live-cattle exports. Beef carcasses and other animal products formed the overwhelming majority of recorded exports, at a time when Botswana's mineral export base was still very small.Today, Botswana is internationally recognised as one of the world's leading diamond-producing countries. But before diamonds transformed our economy, another natural resource was already connecting Botswana to international markets: our cattle."
