Why did the design of two skyscrapers in Seoul cause such an immediate backlash?
In December 2011, Dutch architecture firm MVRDV unveiled plans for a residential project called The Cloud in South Korea.

The design featured two towers standing 260 and 300 meters tall.
Around the 27th floor, the towers were connected by a 10-story structure made from offset blocks.

MVRDV called it a “pixelated cloud,” designed to contain restaurants, pools, lounges and other shared spaces.

People quickly noticed something else.

From certain angles, the blocks between the towers looked uncomfortably similar to the smoke and debris surrounding New York’s Twin Towers during the September 11 attacks.

The resemblance drew international criticism, particularly in the United States.
MVRDV apologized and said the similarity was completely unintentional and had not been noticed during the design process.

The Cloud was expected to be completed around 2015, but the larger development later collapsed financially and the towers were never built.
