Sustainability may be one of the most frequently used words in the coffee industry today—but not always with the same meaning.
At origin, it is about everyday decisions: caring for the soil, preserving natural resources, and investing in practices that often take years to deliver results.
At destination, however, sustainability has also become a matter of risk management. Buyers want to understand where the coffee comes from, how it was produced, and what impact its production has. This does not always mean paying a premium. Increasingly, however, it does mean deciding who to do business with.
Perhaps the biggest shift in the market is not the growing demand for sustainable coffee. It is the fact that sustainability has evolved from being a competitive advantage into becoming part of the language of international coffee trade.
And this is a conversation that is only just beginning.
