The Weasleys are always portrayed as a family that, while not wealthy, is always warm and full of happiness. However, if you look closely, throughout the entire Harry Potter series, the Weasley members are always victims of some major tragedy.
In the second book, Ginny was manipulated by Lucius and Tom Riddle when she was just a first-year student. He used her to attack a ghost at Hogwarts, Mrs. Norris (Filch's cat), and her own classmates. She even nearly lost her life in the Chamber of Secrets.
In the third book, Ron realized that Wormtail had been living with him for all those years after betraying the Potters. Just imagine, the beloved pet you've cared for all this time turns out to be the one who ruined your best friend's family.
In the fifth book, Voldemort sent Nagini to kill Arthur Weasley, who was guarding the prophecy at the time. Mr. Weasley would almost certainly have died had Harry not discovered it. Percy, who had disowned his family to side with the Ministry, didn't even check on him afterward because he was 'busy with work.'
In the sixth book, during the Battle of the Astronomy Tower, Bill Weasley was attacked by the werewolf Fenrir Greyback, leaving him with severe facial scarring and the risk of turning into a werewolf (though fortunately, he didn't).
In the seventh book, during the Battle of the Seven Potters, George permanently lost an ear due to Snape's Sectumsempra curse. That same year, in the Battle of Hogwarts, the Weasley family lost a member: Fred.
And to add to that, this family of nine relied almost entirely on the income of Mr. Weasley, who worked in the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Office. It was a low-paying job, and as Ron remarked, it was the most boring job and Arthur wasn't even respected. His office was so small it was barely bigger than a broom cupboard.
