Obento

Obento Bento is a traditional Japanese meal box which one takes along to work, to school or while on the move like travelling, sightseeing and picnic.

It is prepared at home or sold in shops, in trains and train stations but also at the Kabuki theatre and at sport events like Sumo. It is eaten cold without re-warming. It is invariably eaten the same day. Otherwise the rice gets too hard. It is packed in a box except for the Onigiri which can be wrapped in paper or a leaf. It is arguably the Japanese version of a sandwich. It is composed of rice,

meat and/or fish and/or chicken with vegetables, pickles and toppings. Its visual aspect like disposition and colorfulness has its importance and bento preparers pay attention in making his bento look attractive and appetizing. Take-away Sushi’s and especially Maki’s could also constitute a Bento. The prefix “O” in Obento is the honorary form of Bento. To consume the same day
