I would like to share our Tibetan traditional way before the new year (Losar) starts. Today is a Gu-Thuk evening. Gu-Thuk is a traditional Tibetan ritual meal eaten on the 29th day of the last lunar month, two days before Losar (Tibetan New Year).

The name means “Ninth-Night Soup” (gu = nine, thuk= noodle soup). It dates back centuries in Tibetan Buddhist culture as a way to clear away negativity and bad luck before the New Year begins.

Families gather to eat special noodle soup with dough balls that contain hidden symbolic items (like salt, chili, or coal). Each item playfully reveals a person’s character or fortune for the coming year. After the meal, a small ritual is performed to symbolically remove obstacles and bad spirits from the home.

Gu Thuk is both joyful and meaningful — a night of laughter, reflection, and spiritual cleansing before welcoming the New Year with a fresh start.
