In May 1982, Roger George founded a business dedicated to the importation of British Products, at the time mainly foodstuffs, with a view to serving the large expatriate community in the Brussels area as well as bringing a little part of the U.K. The business is situated just outside Brussels in the village of Everberg (Nr Kortenberg), being in an old “Melkerie” (Dairy) which has been renovated an
d over the years added to. The George family, this being a real family business, in both Belgium and the U.K. , have maintained and improved upon the old rustic look of the site. From the outside you would not know that there are three floors of British department store within.
“My overall concept” says Roger George, “is to provide the expats as well as the whole international community here in Belgium with the very best of British products”. The de Merode castle is a reconstruction of the court of Montenaken. The court of Montenaken was only about a few hundred meters away from the castle. The de Merode castle was built in the 16th century and contains three separate buildings: the residence, a building for the animals and a building for employees and the stabling of the carriages. In 1941 & 1944 Field Marshal Montgomery used the estate as his H.Q. Today the business in Belgium is the market leader in this particular field and there are several major developments planned for the future. In 2006 Stonemanor opened another store in Waterloo albeit smaller than the flagship store in Everberg. The company has its own offices and warehouse in Norlfolk, England. and having a base in the U.K. is important for the business providing continuous access to many major suppliers. Stonemanor now has a separate company dealing entirely with wholesale customers and deals with clients in Belgium, France, Holland, Germany and Luxembourg.
