Sikh in ieper

A third of the British line at Ypres in October 1914 was not British.

It was Indian.

And if that line had broken, the Channel ports might have fallen.

In a recent podcast with Belgian historian Dominiek Dendooven, who has studied the Indian Corps at Ypres extensively, puts it bluntly:

“at one particular moment during the first battle of Ypres… as much as one third of the British line was held by Indian troops… If the Indians hadn’t been there the British wouldn’t have been able to hold that line near Ypres.”

But when we tell the story of Ypres, we do not picture turbans in the mud of Flanders
