How to Write Your Restaurant Description

Your restaurant description gives potential customers a window into what it’s like to dine at your restaurant. Similar to an “About” section on a website, this is a great place to include your
mission statement and values. You can use the space to talk about anything, but we recommend starting with what the experience of eating at your restaurant is like, what influences the cuisine, or spotlighting any signature dishes. Your restaurant description shouldn’t be long — you only have 700 amount of characters after all— but it should give customers a good idea of why your restaurant is different or special. Take a look at our restaurant branding guide or your mission statement for inspiration and expand from there. Your restaurant description is also a great place to give your listing a boost on search engines. Including keywords you want to be known for — like family friendly, locally sourced ingredients, or modern Spanish cuisine — makes it more likely you will be found when a hungry diner is searching for a place like yours. There are some really great examples of restaurant descriptions on Tripadvisor and here are a few of our favorites to help you get started thinking about your own:
A quality and relaxing rural country pub, run by award winning owners, in the beautiful Berkshire village of Peasemore just a short drive from the A34 and junctions 13 and 14 of the M4. The building and decor are charming and rustic, with elegant modern touches. Relax by the cozy log burner perfect for winter evenings or enjoy outdoor seating overlooking open country fields or in a pretty courtyard filled with flowers in the summer months. While their description is a little long, it’s a good way to make a very clear statement about what their restaurant is all about. Including what cuisine they offer, where they get their ingredients from, and what it’s like to dine there in both seasons gives customers a great picture of the restaurant. Fenicci’s, a historic Italian restaurant in Hershey, PA, uses their restaurant description to focus on their cuisine and amenities. By highlighting famous menu items, they’re giving customers a better sense of why Fenicci’s is worth a try over another Italian spot nearby. Craft cocktails using the freshest seasonal ingredients. El Arsenal in Cartagena, Colombia keeps it short, sweet, and to the point using their tagline in place of a longer mission statement. By not adding filler text, they are really highlighting what they are proud of — their signature cocktails. A quality description may seem difficult to come by, but like El Arsenal, it may help to think about what is the most special to you and your guests. Where Your Restaurant Description Appears
You can find your restaurant description in the “Details” section of your Tripadvisor listing under “About.” Your description will only appear after you’ve written one — if you don’t currently have a restaurant description, you won’t see anything in the About section. Make sure to keep your description under 700 characters — anything longer than that will be cut off from the main page. How to Update Your Description
To change or update your restaurant description:
Log in to the Management Center. If you haven’t claimed your listing already, it’s free and easy to do so here. In the “Manage Listing” tab, choose “Name and Description.”
Scroll down to “Business Description” and type or copy and paste what you would like to say in 1000 characters or less. If you would like to add your description in another language, click the “Add Language” button underneath the text box and repeat Step 3. When you’re happy with your description, click the orange “Submit” button at the bottom of the page. Your changes should be live on the site in about 24 hours.
