Johnny and Lola were the face of the Entrance, The Golden Gate was a childhood milk bar that was a go to for our lollies milkshakes. Johnny’s passing saw the place locked up and striped out.
Tried to get it before everything was removed to bring it back to its former glory, but wasn’t to be
RIP Johnny miss you sitting in the shop always with a smile and your story’s of what The Entrance once was

‘Johnny’, as he was affectionately known, became a celebrity to both locals and tourists visiting The Entrance alike.

Lola Raft (née Adilinis) with her husband Dennis

Born on the island of Ithaca, Lola and Johnny migrated out to Australia after World War II. Their maternal uncles, Theo and Nick Laurantos, had migrated earlier. By the start of the 1940s the Laurantos’ had acquired the Golden Gate Café. The café had originally been built by a Mr Mantoni in 1933, opposite the new Price Edward Theatre. After a few years Mantoni sold the business to an unknown American – he applied the name 'Golden Gate' to the café. Dennis (Dyonesios Raftopoulos) purchased the café with a partner from the Laurantos’ in 1949. In the mid-1950s, he married Lola.

Lola:
"The ornate mirror [behind them, with San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge] was ordered from America . . . This is an American-style café . . . We used to have a soda fountain with two arms. Now we sell about two sodas a year. We used to sell hundreds of them. Now people don’t even know what they are!"

Johnny:
"Our business is not declining—just increased competition [from McDonald’s and Kentucky Fried Chicken]. Our business is just different. The town has changed. Roads have diverted traffic away . . . I’ve been a servant to the public for fifty years [and] there is no room for small business [in the future] . . . My time is up."

In 2021, Johnny was still serving the local community and tourists from behind the counter at the Golden Gate until COVID-19 restrictions forced him the close. He later decided to retire permanently but passed away at the start of 2023 following a short and unexpected illness. He was 92.
