You may notice a lack of table and chairs.
Before Christmas the Macedon Ranges council informed me that there would be a fee for tables and chairs for customers that sit outside my establishment.
We can all agree that since Christmas things have become more difficult for many people with the cost of living including running costs for small business owners. Not so fun fact, in 2024 more than 129,000 Victorian small businesses closed.
This week I was contacted again by council. When I questioned " do you think this is a good time to do this given that the cost of living is so high and people are really struggling?" I received a one-word response, "yes".
When I replied and said "I hire young children in the community who rely on this job to pay for petrol so that they can get to University to study. I have already reduced hours so that we can weather the storm as sales are down. Does this not concern you?" I was met with the response " you are not special. We are doing this to everyone". I then asked them what the money was to be used for and although I appreciate transparency, I was not expecting the answer " we did the math and we worked out that we could raise $200,000 a year by charging small businesses for the privilege of sitting their customers outside".
I replied to this gentleman that just because you can do something doesn't mean that you have to and that it seemed unnecessarily cruel to do this at a time when a lot of the businesses that I have been speaking to are down because of the cost of living. This was met with a laugh and then the response " Google the permit as I will not send you any information and you still have two weeks. Otherwise you get a fine if you do not pay for the permit."
I do not want to reduce the hours of my staff anymore than I already have and I do not want to pass on the additional cost to my customers to cover the permit for allowing people to sit outside. So unfortunately this means less seats outside.
Small businesses should not be revenue streams for local councils but are the backbone of our community. I love our community. I love my wonderful customers.
