A special thank you to Colin for everything he does for the RSL, and in particular for our Vietnam veterans.

Colin played a leading role in this year’s Vietnam Days 60th Anniversary commemorations, organising Tuesday evening’s ceremony.

The wonderful feedback from veterans, their families and visitors was a testament to the care, respect, and dedication Colin put into making the occasion so meaningful.

Thank you, Colin, for all that you do to ensure our veterans are remembered and honoured for the service they gave to their country. Your contribution is truly appreciated.

Sometimes, cataloguing a case-full of long-donated items can reveal little treasures hidden in the most unexpected places. Just recently a little Teddy Bear, accompanied by a small Tin-Hat Appeal badge, was discovered uncomfortably squeezed into a an otherwise empty tin of ‘Havelock Flake Cut Tobacco’. This little bear, now well over 100 years old, had accompanied a presently unknown soldier and shared his experiences on the front lines in France and Belgium in WW1.

Mark Hill, a well-known presenter in the much-loved “Antiques Road Show” freely admits to being a captivated owner of one of these adventurous bears. Made by the British Company ‘Farnell’, called ‘Mascot Bears’ and sold for around 1/- (about 10 cents) they were given as mementoes by their sweethearts to their ‘boys’ on the way to war. So, I echo Mark Hill, “Imagine them tucked into the breast pockets of soldiers as they went over the top. The bear I now own came back, but how many didn’t? Holding him in my hand is very special.”

Of course, I don’t ‘own’ this bear and soon he will be travelling again, to become part of a permanent display at the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance, where he will tell the story of a very important little bear.
