Someone at the pharmacy today called me "young lady" while handing me my prescription, and I said thank you the way you accept a compliment you know isn't technically true but appreciate the effort behind anyway. I've stopped correcting people on this. It costs nothing to let it stand. I've also stopped checking whether it's sincere. At a certain point the compliment and the math just quietly stopped needing to agree with each other, and I'm fine with that arrangement.
