Thank you to PerthNow for covering the discussion surrounding the proposed Cellarbrations liquor store at Wagin FoodWorks.

To those who have taken the time to read our Open Letter, we hope our position is clear: this is not about FoodWorks versus Palace Hotel, nor is it simply about competition between two local businesses.

We have openly acknowledged that competition is part of business. Every business, including ours, must continue to improve, invest and earn the support of its customers.

The broader question we have raised for our community to consider is:

Does Wagin need another takeaway liquor outlet - proposed to operate from 8am and located inside Wagin FoodWorks as part of the everyday grocery-shopping environment?

Whatever your view, we encourage you to read the information available, consider the proposal for yourself and make your own submission through the Shire’s formal public consultation process.

Public comment closes 18 September 2026.

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE WAGIN COMMUNITY

After careful consideration, Palace Hotel Wagin has formally set out our position regarding the proposed Cellarbrations liquor store within Wagin Co-op / FoodWorks.

We want to be clear: this is not an attack on FoodWorks, the Co-op, its staff or its shareholders. We want Wagin to have a strong local supermarket, and we want local businesses to continue succeeding.

We also acknowledge openly that another takeaway liquor outlet would create additional competition for our business. We are prepared to compete, improve and continue earning the support of our customers.

But we believe there is a broader question that deserves to be considered by our community:

Does Wagin genuinely need another dedicated takeaway liquor outlet?

Our concerns include the increased availability of takeaway alcohol, its integration into everyday grocery shopping, the proposed trading hours, and the longer-term sustainability of businesses, employment, services and investment within a small regional community.

We have explained our position fully in the attached Open Letter and encourage our community to read it before forming their own view.

This should not become Palace versus FoodWorks.

We simply believe this proposal deserves careful, factual and respectful consideration.

TAKEAWAY UPDATE — PLEASE READ

Well… this is awkward. 😅 After posting at lunchtime that our online ordering was back, Grayza is currently experiencing a system issue and our online ordering is down again.

Unfortunately, our phone line is also still out of service, so at the moment we cannot accept takeaway orders by phone or online.

For tonight, all takeaway orders must be placed ON SITE at Palace Hotel. Please come in, place and pay for your order, and we’ll let you know when it’s ready for collection.

We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience especially after announcing earlier today that we were back online! 🤦‍♂️ Technology clearly had other plans for us today.
