‘Gelassenheit: Letting Things Be’ by Anne Smerdon. You’re invited to the opening of Art Post Uki’s latest exhibition, this Thursday 15 October at 6pm.

Each of the 17 paintings exhibited, is a glance at small everyday objects found on any household shelf or table.

Anne uses the German word Gelassenheit to describe her approach:
“For most of my arts practice, control has been at the forefront. I spend hours composing a painting, positioning objects and staging the scene. I check and recheck until the composition balances or tells the story that I want the audience to hear. Then I paint.

But with this collection, I embraced Gelassenheit. I stopped arranging. I left objects scattered instead of composing them. I let my birds interact however they chose. I rejected the impulse to control the narrative or composition. I let things be.”

Come share a Picnic in the Park before the Art Post show, with street food from Gunter’s Wood Fired Pizza and music by Loren Jemahli 4pm–8pm.

Exhibition continues until 25 November.

One last chance to spend time with Marie-France Rose’s ‘Retrospective’ before we say goodbye this Monday, 12 October.

A life well lived, and a life richly shared.

For Marie-France Rose, art was never simply something she made. It was a lifelong passion — expressed through sculpture, painting, teaching and above all, an extraordinary curiosity about the people, places and everyday moments around her.

Born and raised in Quebec, Marie-France eventually made her home here in Uki, where she became a dear friend to many and an important part of the local arts community. Her warmth, humour, generosity and creative spirit touched so many lives.

‘Retrospective’ brings together work spanning more than a decade of Marie-France’s artistic life, including her final series, Every Dog and His Man — seven small, wonderfully playful studies of people and their beloved dogs.

Alongside the exhibition, we are sharing a slideshow of photographs celebrating Marie-France’s life, her friendships and the joy she brought to those around her.

It feels fitting that, in her absence, the gallery is filled with her colour, humour and creativity — a beautiful reminder of a much-loved woman who left so much of herself behind.

Marie-France’s Retrospective is on display at Art Post Uki until Wednesday 14 October.

Marie-France Rose’s final work before her passing, entitled ‘Every Dog and His Man’, is part of Retrospective, her exhibition now showing at Art Post Uki.

She explained: As our society is more cohabiting with our friendly, furry animals - the dog. In this exhibition I am taking on the association of the man and his dog . Also the implication of living with dogs. I will be creating two rows of story telling on how we associate with them . Marie-France Rose:
“My sculptures are hand built using clay slabs to make hollow forms, which are then fired in a gas kiln to become my canvas.
For my 3-dimensional paintings, I create forms in clay to add texture and dimension to my canvasses. Oil or acrylic paint is used to produce the illusion of metal or vibrant colours.
My art could be described as naive.“

MARIE-FRANCE ROSE — A RETROSPECTIVE
You’re invited to the opening of Art Post Uki’s latest exhibition, this Thursday 3 September at 6pm.

Warm, joyful and full of humour, Marie-France’s distinctive works sit somewhere between sculpture and painting. She hand-builds figures and objects from clay, attaches them to canvas, then paints over and around them — creating paintings with texture and dimension.

Inspired by people, nature, village life and the places she travelled, her work has an unmistakable sense of optimism.

Marie-France used to say, “I love observing people and nature. I love to freeze the moment.” Tragically, Marie-France died in June this year, but she leaves a wonderful collection of work that continues to bring joy to those who see it.

Come share a Picnic in the Park before the Art Post show, with street food from Gunter’s Wood Fired Pizza and music by Loren & the Choosedays, 3.15–6pm.

Exhibition continues until 14 October.
