Fun facts about Dutch Medlars (Mespilus germanica):
A popular sweet treat for thousands of years before the arrival of sugar.
Nicknamed “open arse” fruit, they fell out of favour (not surprisingly with an image like that to contend with!)
Ripened fruit looks like it has spoiled but is absolutely delicious.
An unfussy smallish tree that is cold hardy and puts on a stunning Autumn show, as you can see.
Is it time to add some heritage charm to your cold climate garden and find a spot for a medlar?
