The building was still standing damaged from the 2005 fire, boarded windows and all. Just out of frame, a chalkboard sign was still up from before the fire. It read, "Sorry, restaurant fully booked tonight. Meals available in bar."

Since current ownership took the reins in 2009, we've heard so many stories from the town and the building's colourful history, and the Green Room is no exception.

This space required extensive renovations following the fire in 2005, yet still contains many original materials such as the floorboards, repurposed into a table using local blackwood timber, alongside a set of salvaged pub doors from Ballarat. Long before that, this room served as the town's dental room, with a travelling dentist visiting once a month.

Stay tuned as we go deeper into the history of each room in the hotel on social media over the coming weeks.

This is William Byrne, publican of the Cosmopolitan Hotel from 1880 until his death in 1923.

William married into the family who built this place. Georgenia Bickley's parents opened the original hotel on this site, and when she and William married in 1877, it set the family up to run the pub for the best part of a century. William became publican a few years later, and the couple had six children, all born in the building.

When William died, Georgenia took over and ran the pub herself for nine more years. Their daughter Maud took over next, and kept the place going as a guest house even after it lost its liquor licence in 1937, right through to 1950.

The family is still part of the building today. Ken Byrne, a descendant of William and Georgenia, handles the lighting and electrical work at The Cosmo.
