We’re part of James Hoffmann x Caravela Coffee Decaf Project! So we’re roasting and sending tasting sets across Australia (currently working out to NZ, too).

What’s this Decaf Project!? Perhaps the biggest coffee collab of all times, led by James Hoffman in collaboration with Caravela and a bunch of keen roasters around the world.

What for? To learn about, taste, and break myths about decaffeinated coffee. And, really, just to be part of something huge, unique and mind-opening, bringing together the online and IRL coffee experience.

Each roaster will be in charge of roasting and distributing the Decaf Project tasting sets across their region. Each set features 1 origin, Colombia La Virgen, in 4 different versions:

Unprocessed (as it comes after a washed fermentation)
EA Natural decaf process
Swiss Water® decaf Process
CO2 Subcritical decaf Process

In our case, the coffee will be roasted on our Kestrel 35 using tailored omni profiles.

James will upload a bunch of informative videos (including factory visits) in the lead-up to a live online tasting session on 15th December at 3 PM GMT (16th December at 2 AM AEDT) (to be confirmed!). This sure is a tricky time choice for us down under (classic!), but we will be able to catch up on the recording afterwards—or simply brew and experience each coffee at our own pace without the need to follow a typical cupping protocol.

Obviously, the number of tasting sets available is limited. So, if you’re keen, this is what you need to do:

Here’s our first Guatemalan of 2024, Las Flores, amongst what it’s namesake translates to in English: the flowers. ⁠

It’s not often we feature coffee from this part of the world, so you know that when we do, it’s something special. It comes from Santa Isabel in Alta Verapaz, whom importers have been working with since way back in 2011. This lot has been carefully curated every day to include the most floral and complex tasting coffee the farm produces. ⁠

We think it really shines through in the end product. This is a tasty Caturra lot with hints of baked peach and toffee. If you’re a BrewCrew subscriber who’s received this recently, tell us what notes you’ve been finding!⁠

Remember that Colombian we had last year with flavours of riesling? It's back as crisp as we remember. 🍏

This small lot by Carlos Imbachi, from Finca Buena Vista, is pretty small, so it will only be available for retail online, at our cafes and at our wholesale network. It's a beautiful washed Caturra that has been executed with the care and precision of a VDP—the category for the best vineyards in Germany. May as well be sold at .
