MATRAVILLE 1935–1945

Matraville looked very different in the decade between 1935 and 1945.

Large areas were still open land, with market gardens, poultry farms and pig farms scattered throughout the district.

In 1936, the area previously known as Bunnerong officially became Matraville, as the suburb we know today began to take shape.

One of the biggest influences on the area was Bunnerong Power Station. The station expanded significantly during the late 1930s, bringing workers and their families into the district and helping change Matraville from a semi-rural outer suburb into an increasingly industrial, working-class community.

Sitting on the corner of Bunnerong Road and Perry Street was the Matraville Hotel, which had opened in 1928.

Originally surrounded by a much quieter landscape, the hotel increasingly became a local watering hole for workers from the power station, construction projects and the surrounding area.

Then, in 1939, Australia entered World War II.

Bunnerong Power Station became an important part of Sydney's electricity infrastructure, while the coastline around Matraville, Little Bay and La Perouse took on greater military significance.

For the families living here, these weren't stories happening somewhere else.

This was everyday life in Matraville.

Workers heading to Bunnerong. Families living around the farms and growing suburbs. Local footy. A b**r at the Matraville Hotel. And a world at war.

There’s something pretty good about a Sunday at your local.

Dogs hanging out in the b**r garden, families around the tables, long lunches, cold drinks and nowhere anyone really needs to be.

So if you missed yesterday, here’s an idea for next Sunday…

🐾 Take the dog for a run at nearby Pioneers Park in Malabar, or Woomera Reserve in Little Bay, all are designated off-leash areas.

Then make your way back to the Matto.

Grab a table in the b**r garden, order some lunch, have a cold b**r and let your four-legged local settle in beside you.

Dogs are welcome at the Matto, and we love seeing them down here.

1. How many do you fit?
B**r garden up to 80. Sports Bar up to 140. Bistro up to 100. Bigger than that, talk to us we've done it before.

2. What's the food?
Canape package from $30 a head, built for a social experience. Tell us what your group's like and we'll build something that suits.

3. What does it cost?
No minimum spend. No room hire on most dates. Food per head, drinks package if you want one, and that's it.

MATRAVILLE, 1928. WHERE OUR STORY BEGAN.

Long before the Matto as we know it today, there was a very different Matraville.
The area was dotted with market gardens, poultry farms and pig farms, and what is now a busy part of Sydney was still developing into a community of its own.

Then, in 1928, on the corner of Perry Street and Bunnerong Road, the Matraville Hotel opened its doors. A conditional licence had been approved the year before for a new hotel estimated to cost £11,000, with the new licence granted in October 1928.

Back then, the Matto was reportedly regarded as something of a “lonely outpost” a place where local farmers and workers could stop for a drink, a conversation and some company.

But Matraville was changing.

Industry was growing around the area, and the hotel would increasingly become a watering hole for workers associated with Bunnerong Power Station and major sewerage works nearby.

One of the early publicans was Joseph “Joe” Levy, who ran the hotel from around 1929. In fact, the Matraville Hotel became known locally by a nickname associated with Joe during those early years.

And by 1938, ten years after those doors first opened, the Matto had gone from an isolated pub on the edge of Sydney to part of a growing working community.

Nearly a century later, the suburb around us looks very different.
But one thing hasn't changed.
The Matto is still a place for locals to meet. ❤️

We're going to start digging further into the history of our pub and the suburb that grew around it and we'd love the community's help.

THANKS DAD — THAT WAS A BANGER.

What a Father’s Day at the Matto.

A huge thank you to all the Dads, families and locals who came down yesterday and spent the day with us.

There were plenty of steaks, ribs and sausages making their way out of the kitchen, a few cold b**rs disappearing across the bar and enough Dad jokes to last us until next September.

We thought about finishing with another sausage joke… but frankly, the wurst ones have already been used.

Thanks again to everyone who joined us and to the Matto team for putting on a massive day.

Father's Day sorted, Matraville 🙌

We've locked in the menu for the Matto's Father's Day BBQ on Sunday 6 September smokey bourbon-glazed pork ribs (properly good, ask anyone who's had them), the $75 BBQ platter for the whole table, and a sticky date pudding with a Kraken rum caramel that's going to cause arguments over the last bite.

Kids welcome (eat for free at lunch with main meal purchase), dogs welcome in the garden and it's walking distance for half the suburb.
