We were so pleased to have a sold out crowd welcome Tasmanian author Katherine Johnson in-conversation with author Suzanne Leale, sharing her book, Every Wild Soul, Winner of the Australian Fiction Prize.

Every Wild Soul is a beautifully crafted tale set against the wild and remote Maria Island, written by Tasmanian biologist and celebrated author, Katherine Johnson. It weaves themes of survival, secrets and the healing power of nature into a compelling narrative that will resonate deeply with fans of ‘Where the Crawdads Sing’ and ‘The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart.’

The judges of The Australian Fiction prize described the work as ‘a beautifully atmospheric, absorbing and tender novel’, agreeing ‘without a doubt, this cinematic tale is a deserving recipient of the inaugural prize’.

A breathtakingly beautiful and gripping exploration of humanity’s connection to the wild - and the hope that can be born from even the darkest of times - Every Wild Soul is an absorbing and evocative exploration of resilience, rewilding and healing, a story with nature and courage at its heart.
Drawing on her extensive background as a trained biologist and science writer, Katherine brings striking authenticity to these environmental themes. The narrative is also deeply shaped by her own life. After enduring pregnancy loss and her husband’s cancer diagnosis, Katherine experienced firsthand the healing power of nature. She channeled this deeply personal journey into her writing to demonstrate that people are remarkably resilient when they reconnect with the earth. The novel highlights the urgent relevance of current environmental issues while offering a steadfast message of hope and courage.

New Event: Eyewitness to Gaza

Date: Thursday 18th June 2026
Time: 6pm

In a special Bookoccino evening, a Noble Prize recipient neurosurgeon, who has just returned from Gaza, and a prize-winning investigative journalist, who has spent years living and reporting from Israel, Palestine and across the Middle East, will discuss what they have seen.

Gaza has been largely closed to journalists and even international aid workers since the Israeli invasion following Hamas’s attack on Israel in 2023.

In April of this year, the UN and EU issued a statement saying that human development in Gaza had been set back 77 years, with nearly all schools destroyed or damaged, half of all hospitals non-functional, and over 60% of the population homeless or displaced.

After nearly three years of war in Gaza, what is left of the neighbourhoods, the hospitals, the people?

Dr Ruth Mitchell was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2017 as part of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN). She is currently Chair of the Boards of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) and the Children First Foundation. During her recent visit to Gaza she performed 17 neurosurgical operations in 11 days.

She’ll be joined by Antony Loewenstein, journalist, film-maker and author of the best-selling The Palestine Laboratory: How Israel Exports the Technology of Occupation Around the World, which won the Walkley Book Award in 2023.

If you missed Patrick Radden Keefe at the Sydney Writers Festival, listen to this riveting interview on ABC Conversations about his latest book, London Falling: A mysterious death in a gilded city, and a family's search for truth.

We just got London Falling, back in stock. If you like true-crime, you will love this: https://shop.bookoccino.com.au/p/london-falling-a-mysterious-death-in-a-gilded-city-and-a-family-s-search-for-truth

Today it's Richard's interview with Patrick Radden Keefe, staff writer at The New Yorker and a bestselling author, who was in Australia for the Sydney Writers' Festival.

Patrick's new book begins with the description of a scene that was picked up by a surveillance camera in London in the early hours of a November morning in 2019.

The footage showed a grainy image of a shadowy figure, anxiously moving about the balcony of a luxury apartment.

That young man's name was Zac Brettler.

He was 19 years old, and hours later his body was discovered on the banks of the River Thames.

Patrick Radden Keefe’s investigation explores Zac’s secret life posing as the son of a Russian oligarch, and delves into the true identities of the wealthy gangsters who were there in his final hours:
