Facebook reminded me that, ten years ago, I graduated from law school in San Francisco with an LL.M.
My life looks nothing like I thought it would, and it feels like a completely different version of me.
It made me think about how much has changed since then, and why I actually love being a pastry chef after ditching my career as a lawyer.
I get to be creative. Because let’s be honest, there’s only so much creative freedom when you work around regulations, rulings, and the law.
Every day I take simple ingredients and turn them into something you can actually eat, share, and get excited about.
I get to fix your sweet cravings, instead of legal problems. And I’ll take that swap any day. Seeing someone light up over a cookie or a tart is a lot more fun and rewarding, than getting the best divorce settlement you can possibly dream of.
You come to me for joy, happiness, little moments, comfort food, or just because you felt like it. Not because something went terribly wrong with your employer or your landlord.
And then there’s probably the biggest shift: I just get to be my (slightly) weird self.
No need to hide my tattoos, no need to always look polished, no need to fit into a professional mould that never felt right.
Although I will admit: I do miss the cute outfits and high heels sometimes. Not exactly kitchen-friendly, unfortunately 😉
The question I still get now and then: would I ever go back? Do I miss it?
No. Not one bit.
