All eyes may be on our fresh Marrickville shop, but the good stuff keeps going as usual at Sample Coffee Surry Hills and St Peters.

Our free monthly tasting sessions are coming up this week, and guess what? We’ve got 2 x El Sal, 1 of them natural process (alongside some Sample staple origins from Colombia, Ethiopia, and Kenya). If you know… 😏

RSVP via LINK IN BIO - or turn up unannounced and hope there’s some juice for you, we’ll do our best to provide. Always.

See you?

We’ve just opened Sample Coffee Marrickville! A “futuristic” micro espresso bar next to our (soon to be) coffee roastery.

🔥

Last Friday (28 August) we quietly opened the doors of our newest shop, Sample Coffee Marrickville. It’s a small – but powerful! – retail space attached to what will be the home of our future roastery.

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁
As some of you may know already, we need to move the roastery out of St Peters due to the Precinct 75 redevelopment works. (But not the Pro Shop! The cafe is staying alive and open for the foreseeable future!)

Earlier this year, we secured the building at 37 Sydenham Road, Marrickville, and have since been steadily working on the relocation. It’s now all ‘go’ except for one last, essential factor: gas! Which we absolutely need to fire up and roast with our Loring Kestrel S35.

Unfortunately, we don’t know when the connection will happen. But we were so keen (and ready) to be in the buzzing Sydenham Road, so we decided to open the espresso bar first, and do the roastery later. (Hopefully not too long!)

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
It’s 50 metres from Sydenham Station, steps away from the western Metro gates. You don’t even have to change footpaths: tap out, walk 30 seconds, and boom! We’re there.

Local tip 1: parking is quite scarce, except for some ‘kiss-and-ride’ spots. If you’re keen to visit, the best move is to walk, cycle, or metro/train here.

Local tip 2: watch out for mindless e-bike riders on this footpath; there are plenty. Take care of yourselves.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲
It embraces the local industrial character, street art culture, and brewery/taproom scene. It’s relaxed, playful, pragmatic, and focused on what really matters to us: sharing delicious coffee.

The espresso bar/retail shop occupies the existing shopfront room of the previous business – a swimwear manufacturing company. It’s tiny, and we kept it that way.

The few additions: a floating solid timber bar counter, a rear work station, some retail shelves, and a cozy window bench. Plus, a “futuristic” [sic.] coffee setup designed to serve the working local workforce and station commuters.

We’ll be the *official* coffee maker at The Little Food Market in Carriageworks on 21-23 August.

🧀 🍷 ☕️

When they reached out to us saying, “Do you want to be the coffee supplier at our first little food market in Sydney?” we said, “Well, we’ll be right in the middle of our Marrickville coffee shop opening and roastery move, but… why not? We can do it!?”

😎

We’re still finalising our stand layout, but we’re working to include a classic 3-group espresso setup, a Six Simple Machines tap unit (mirroring our Surry Hills offerings) and, whenever we don’t get too slammed by the crowds, a pour over brewing station. Plus, of course, some retail beans and goodies.

If you’re free that weekend and you love the good stuff and (it the people who make it happen), come around, meet us, have a feast.

We sure will.

A few pics from last Saturday event at Surry Hills.

Thanks for everyone who came by. Such lovely vibes in the Holt Street plaza 👀 City of Sydney

Thanks also to Rino Fukuno for bringing and sharing some Koss Coffee Yoshihara fuglenkyoto, and basically for being the reason for organising this!

And lastly thanks alex • tokyo creative「design, coffee & street photography」 for that last group pic 🫶 and to Porteño Restaurant x Humble Bakery & Cafe for serendipitously putting on a pop-up in the same day 😬 burger was insane.

Arigatou gozaimasu all!

It’s official: sandwiches are back in St Peters.

🥪 ☕️

After a few *sad* months without proper food and a kitchen, we’re bringing back a small but tasty sandwich menu to the St Peters Pro Shop. It features 4 styles made on-bar (just like when we opened back in 2015) and ready to take away or enjoy in.

The reason to bring it back?

Mainly to serve the tradies and locals, but also commuters who drive by for a takeaway and hungry coffee hoppers who make the effort to come to this area. There are not many options nearby, and our staff had some time to make some simple food happen. So we wanted to give it a go.

The menu and systems have been designed by Gaspar from Hotluck, so tastiness and sourcing quality are guaranteed. The idea is to keep it as is for simplicity, but we may adjust slightly as we test the setup and demand. Our online menu (via samplecoffee.com.au/locations) is always up to date.

❤️‍🔥 Because, just in case you were wondering, the St Peters Pro Shop is not going anywhere! ❤️‍🔥

The roastery and wholesale operations are moving (very soon) to Marrickville, but the cafe space will stay throughout the Precinct 75 redevelopment works.

So, you know, we want to keep feeding and caffeinating those workers so they finish ASAP! Smirk😏

The arrival of fresh crop Ethiopians is pretty much like Xmas at Sample. Wait, no, it’s way better.

Halo Beriti is the first from the 2025/26 harvest.

It’s a name we know well, as we’ve roasted coffee from this cooperative for a few years now (via Cafe Imports Australia). As usual, it’s juicy and bright, and we get something like nectarine, caramel, and jasmine.

Want some? It’s online.

⚠️ Today is the LAST DAY to send feedback!

As you may know, is proposing to remove the pedestrian and car-free status of the Holt & Devonshire Street pocket park. (Pictured above) ❤️

Why?

To “improve access for heavy vehicles servicing businesses in the area” (sic) 🫠

If you have any feelings about this proposal, whichever way, TODAY IS THE LAST DAY to have your say.

You can do the survey via their website, just be warned you’ll have to log in, etc.

Another easy way to let them know your opinion is to send an email saying whether you support or object to their proposal of reopening Holt Street:

[email protected]

On comments, there’s a link with a pre-filled support message template, email address, and subject. Make it your own and mention your own context to make it even more powerful!

We understand the access issue is important to workers and neighbours, but surely there are other ways that don’t involve wiping out this well-loved pedestrian space…

Let’s go!
