Today is the UN International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste (IDAFLW), which promotes awareness and collective action to reduce food loss and waste.

Around 60% of food waste is wasted at the household level, 28% from food service, and 12% from retail (UN Food Waste Index Report, 2024).

At Sunbury Community Harmony Food Co-op we try to reduce food waste as much as possible. We:
🥬 Give cabbage, cauliflower and lettuce leaves to community members for their chickens and rabbits
🥦 Sell last week’s produce at 50% off
🥕 Donate leftover produce to food relief

Improving food security for current and future generations requires a sustainable and resilient food system—and we all have a role to play. By taking action individually and collectively, we can help reduce food loss and waste.

There are many ways to make a difference. Today, we’re sharing an infographic from the UN with some practical tips for reducing food waste at home. 😊
