A lot of people know us for our café and training program, but sometimes it’s easy to forget that we do so much more than that! 💚

Behind the scenes, we have a team of absolute legends providing support, mentoring, connection and plenty of fun for people with disability out in the community.

Isaac had the best night hanging out with his mentor Chris — cooking up an absolute storm, settling in for movies, plenty of laughs and just enjoying a great night together.

Then came the not-so-glamorous part… an early morning wake-up so Isaac could head to the airport and fly out to join his parents on holiday! ✈️😂

Although that early start got a whole lot more exciting when Isaac got to meet Elliott Robert Crane from Furnace & The Fundamentals at the airport! Safe to say, that was a pretty great way to start a holiday! 🙌

These are the moments we love.

Sometimes support looks like learning something new or tackling the big stuff, and sometimes it looks like cooking dinner, watching a movie, having someone great to hang out with and making sure you’re up in time for your flight!

We’re incredibly lucky to have a team of people who genuinely enjoy spending time with the people they support — and we think that makes all the difference. 💚

An update from General Store at The Heart 💚

As many people know, the hospitality industry and small businesses are facing a challenging time, and General Store at The Heart isn’t immune to those pressures.

For us, however, General Store has always been about more than simply running a café. At the heart of what we do is creating training opportunities, meaningful experiences, connection and community for people with disability.

To make sure we can protect that purpose and continue doing what matters most, we’re making some changes to our trading hours.

Our new café trading hours will be:

Monday–Friday
9:30am – 2:30pm

Our café will no longer open for general trade on Saturdays.

However, weekends aren’t disappearing completely! We’ll be introducing a booking system for large groups and private bookings, allowing us to open specifically for these events. This means we can order stock specifically for each booking, roster accordingly, reduce unnecessary costs and, importantly, continue creating opportunities for people with disability to be involved in preparing and working at these events.

If you already have a standing monthly group booking with us, your booking will continue as normal.

We know these changes won’t be ideal for everyone, and we genuinely appreciate your understanding.

Our number one priority is making sure General Store at The Heart remains a place where people with disability can learn, build confidence, develop skills, connect with others and be part of their community.

We really hope our community continues to get behind what we’re creating. Every coffee, breakfast, lunch, booking and visit helps us continue providing these opportunities.

🎉 CHRISTIAN GOT THE JOB! 🎉 And we could not be prouder. 💚

Christian has been absolutely thriving in our café training program — and now he has landed his first job at one of South Australia’s most iconic places… The Big Rocking Horse! 🐴☕️ Christian is taking everything he has been working on with our mentors at Local Heart Community and put it into action.

We also want to give a HUGE acknowledgement to Mell, the wonderful owner of The Big Rocking Horse. 💚

Mell heard about our program and our goal of connecting participants with local businesses willing to provide genuine work opportunities — and she jumped on board.

Her warmth, kindness and openness have truly meant the world.

Our mentors have been able to work alongside Christian and the team at The Big Rocking Horse to help create successful shifts — and Christian has certainly shown them what he can do! 🌟

Christian is a testament to what can happen when people are given the opportunity to show just how capable they are.

And Mell is a wonderful example of what happens when local businesses get behind local people and simply say, “We’ll give someone a go.”

That’s what community is all about. 💚

Mell and The Big Rocking Horse are most certainly part of our BIG HEART CLUB — businesses and people with a genuine heart for making a difference. 🫶

We can’t wait to follow Christian and The Big Rocking Horse’s journey together and watch him continue to learn, grow and thrive in his new workplace. 🐴💚

And if you’re around Gumeracha, make sure you stop by and show them some love!

Of course there’s the incredible toy store, the animals and the iconic Big Rocking Horse itself — but even if you’re simply passing through and need a coffee, something to eat or a road-trip break, pop in and say hello. ☕️

The coffee is wonderful, the people are even better, and clearly it’s a pretty great place to be! 😉

We are SO proud of our team after last week’s booking! 💚✨

Just look at these big smiles! 🥰

Peter and Mentor Chris worked alongside our wonderful cook, Yuliany, to prepare and serve these beautiful platters for one of our bookings — and what an amazing job they did!

From preparing the food, putting everything together and getting it ready to serve, it was such a fantastic team effort. 🙌

We couldn’t have been prouder of the whole crew — although judging by those smiles, we think they were feeling pretty proud of themselves too! 💚

Great food, great teamwork and even better smiles. This is what we love to see at General Store at The Heart.

Do you want to know one of the fantastic things about us neurospicy people?

We LOVE learning, collecting random things, and diving headfirst into quirky little hobbies. Sometimes other people don't quite get it... but we absolutely embrace our weird and wonderful interests. And every now and then, one of those hobbies becomes surprisingly useful!

This morning, Fern managed to lock herself out of her office... with both the keys and the spare keys safely locked inside. 🤦‍♀️😂

Luckily, Liam happens to be a collector of locks and keys. Somewhere along the way, that hobby also led him to acquire a lock-picking kit. Needless to say, he was absolutely in his element trying to crack the lock🔐

When the lock refused to cooperate, mentor Chris stepped in with Plan B... and let's just say we discovered he has some unexpected gymnast-level skills that none of us knew about! 🤸🤣

What started as a minor inconvenience quickly turned into a spontaneous morning filled with problem-solving, teamwork, and plenty of laughter.

Sometimes the best memories come from the moments that definitely weren't part of the plan. 💚

P.s any local locksmiths or antique stores out there that would like to give some work experience to our great guy Liam with all his interests in tinkering that would be great !

🎉 Happy Birthday Jody! 🎉

As our team continues to grow, things get pretty busy. Between supporting clients in the community, running programs, working in the café, and keeping everything moving behind the scenes, there are times when we don't all get to see each other as often as we'd like. Every single member of our team is important and integral to what we do, and sometimes milestones can slip by.

But this one was impossible to let pass without a big shout-out.

Jody is such an important part of our Local Heart Community family. Not only is she the life of the party, but she embodies everything we stand for – leading with heart, kindness, and genuine care for others.

Many of our participants know Jody from the community garden, where she's often teaching people about the vegetables and herbs we're growing, sharing knowledge, laughter, and creating connections along the way.

Behind the scenes, Jody is also our incredible Service Coordinator, managing rosters, bookings, and supporting our staff to ensure everything runs smoothly. So much of what our team is able to achieve happens because of the work, dedication, and support she provides every day.

Today is an extra special celebration because not only is it Jody's birthday, but this week marks 1 year of working with Local Heart Community. 🥳

We are better for having you on our team, and we can't thank you enough for everything you do for our participants, our staff, and our community.

Happy Birthday, Jody, and congratulations on your first year with us! 💚

Proud of these guys this morning 🌄

Lauren, our seasoned runner, was here bright and early to lead the group, and these young legends, Zac and Neil, showed up to support.

Neil, our resident snooze button enthusiast, will be early to work today 😉 What a legend.

And Zac was keen to get involved, learning the route so he can take the lead when Lauren can't make it. That's the kind of initiative we love to see and the community we are building.

These young ones are putting the rest of us to shame, so let's see if we can get a few more community members along next week!

We're moving it back a little to see if a few sleepy heads might find it easier to get there. No excuses now! 😄

A great snap 📸 from today’s Run Club. The feedback on the route was great, with everyone enjoying the surroundings, fresh air, and a morning out in nature 🌿☀️

With Fern waiting back at the café with chilled water for the runners on arrival back and the coffee machine ready to go ☕️ the loop is approximately 5kms, with a few early turn-off points along the way for anyone wanting a shorter circuit.

We’d love to see even more people out at the next one — all paces and abilities welcome 💚 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️
