Today, the 3rd of September, is Merchant Navy Day.

Merchant Navy Day marks the anniversary of the first attack on an Allied merchant ship on 3 September 1939.

Merchant ships played an important role in both World Wars, transporting military personnel, wounded soldiers, vital resources for Allied forces, and evacuating and transporting civilians. These ships travelled in dangerous conditions, constantly under attack from enemy forces.

At least 65,000 Allied merchant seamen died during the First and Second World War; the exact number still unknown. Today, we honour and recognise the sacrifice of the merchant service and pay tribute to the lives lost.
