Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Kurume GR1

This coffee comes from Tamirat Dukale, a smallholder producer in Chirada, Yirgacheffe, who grew up farming coffee with his family.

As the eldest son, Tamirat left primary school to work alongside his parents on their family farm. When he started his own family, he inherited 2.67 hectares of coffee land. As his parents grew older, he also took on responsibility for managing their plots.

In 2022, Tamirat began working with G Broad through the Jabanto group. Since then, he has grown his farm from 2.67 to 4 hectares, continuing to build his own coffee production in the highlands of Yirgacheffe.

His farm sits at 1,980 MASL, where the coffee grows in Eutric Nitisol soils and is planted with 74110 and Kurume varietals.

The coffee is processed naturally, beginning with the selective handpicking of fully ripe red cherries. The cherries are carefully sorted before being spread across raised drying beds, where they are turned by hand every 30 to 60 minutes during the first few days, then several times each day as they dry.

The cherries take around 21 days to dry, with careful attention throughout the process to protect them from rain, excessive heat, mould and unwanted fermentation.

The result is a sweet and juicy espresso with ripe blueberry and tropical mango, complemented by bright bergamot and smooth dark chocolate. The fruit brings a vibrant, juicy character to the cup, while the dark chocolate carries through into a sweet, lingering finish.

Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Kurume GR1 is available now.

Guatemala Santa Clara Estate

For more than 100 years, the Zelaya family has been producing coffee in Antigua, Guatemala. Today, fourth-generation producer Ricardo Zelaya continues that tradition at Santa Clara Estate, a 90-hectare farm set high on the slopes of Hunahpú Volcano at 1550 to 1890 MASL.

When Ricardo took over the farm in 1988, coffee was only planted across its lower elevations. He saw the potential of the higher slopes and spent years expanding coffee production into these areas, helping establish Santa Clara as one of Antigua’s renowned coffee farms.

The farm is also deeply focused on long-term sustainability. Twenty-five hectares of Santa Clara are protected as natural reserve, while the coffee is shade-grown to help maintain soil health and provide habitat for birds and insects. Coffee pulp from the mill is composted and returned to the farm as organic fertiliser, while water is carefully managed to prevent pollution of local waterways.

This Bourbon coffee is washed and processed entirely on the estate, where the Zelaya family controls the coffee from picking through to export. The cherries are pulped, fermented for 14 to 22 hours, washed and then slowly dried across patios and raised beds in controlled conditions.

The result is a sweet and juicy cup with ripe plum and orange notes, soft hazelnut, and a refreshing watermelon character. It has a rounded, silky mouthfeel, balanced acidity and a super-clean finish that reflects the classic character of Antigua coffees.

Small batches, plenty of attention to detail. Our Head Roaster, Yogesh, working through smaller roasts to test and develop coffees, looking closely at how each coffee responds throughout the roast and making adjustments along the way. It’s all part of getting to know the coffee and finding the right roast profile for it.

Who's tried our Costa Rica Volcán Azul?

Produced by Alejo Kahle Castro, a descendant of one of Costa Rica’s pioneering coffee families, Volcán Azul carries a tradition of pursuing exceptional coffee that spans generations.

The story of the farm traces back to Alejo C. Jiménez, one of Costa Rica’s early coffee pioneers, whose family shared a vision of producing exceptional coffee for the emerging European market. Today, that same focus on quality continues at Volcán Azul.

Grown above 1400 MASL in rich volcanic soils, the coffee is carefully managed from the ground up. For the team at Volcán Azul, producing quality coffee starts well before harvest, with healthy soil, carefully selected varieties, healthy plants and sustainable farming practices.

At harvest, cherries are picked at optimum ripeness, with the farm using the Brix content of the fruit to help determine when they are ready. The selected cherries are then dried whole on raised beds for 12 to 16 days, with controlled fermentation and slow drying helping to develop the coffee’s natural sweetness and fruit character.

The farm also places a strong focus on conservation, protecting areas of natural rainforest alongside coffee production.

The result is a clean, juicy cup with flavours of plum, peach, cherry and jasmine, balanced by bright acidity and a lingering sweetness.
