🎷 JAZZ IS STILL ALIVE AT EL ROCCO

Down a little staircase in Kings Cross is one of the most storied rooms in Australian jazz.

El Rocco opened in Brougham Street in 1955, its tiny basement carved further into the sandstone beneath the building. Jazz arrived almost by accident two years later, when live musicians began filling the hours after the television broadcast ended for the night.

What followed became legendary.

By 1959, El Rocco was presenting jazz five nights a week, with queues spilling out of the cellar and along Brougham Street. Don Burrows, Mike Nock, Bernie McGann and generations of Australian musicians played here, while international names including Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Brubeck, Nancy Wilson and Lou Rawls found their way into the room.

Often described as a birthplace of modern Australian jazz, its place in the country’s musical history was significant enough to inspire the 1990 documentary Beyond El Rocco.

And nearly 70 years after those first jazz nights, the music is still playing.

Every Wednesday night, musicians gather again in the historic El Rocco basement for the El Rocco Jazz Jam.

No grand stage. No huge room. Just musicians, an audience and live jazz in a cellar that has been doing this since 1957.

Two weeks in and the new menu has officially settled into El Rocco life. 🍕
And judging by what’s been disappearing across the counter, a few of the new additions are already becoming favourites.

If you haven’t worked your way through them yet, Tuesday is a very good night to start.

Less weekend chaos, a better chance of grabbing a table and plenty of time to try something you haven’t ordered before.
