CASH IS WELCOME 💵❤️
From today, 1 October, card surcharges are no longer permitted on card payments in Australia.
For customers, that sounds like great news — and we completely understand why. Times are tough, and every dollar counts.
But there is another side to this change that perhaps isn’t quite as obvious.
The card surcharge you previously paid wasn’t money we simply pocketed. It helped cover the fee we are charged every time a card is tapped.
And while the surcharge may have disappeared for the customer, the cost of accepting that card hasn’t disappeared for the business.
For a small business, what might be a relatively small amount on one transaction becomes thousands of dollars when multiplied across hundreds of transactions week after week.
We put a lot of thought into our prices at La Pâtisserie du Port. We want to continue making our pastries, breads, cakes, sandwiches and coffee accessible while also paying our staff, suppliers, rent and all the other costs involved in opening our doors each morning.
So we're going to try very hard not to simply increase our prices across the board to compensate.
And that's why we're saying:
Cash is very welcome. 💵
We're not offering a special discount for paying cash — because the costs we need to cover haven't suddenly disappeared. But every cash transaction means one less card-processing fee for our little business, and those savings genuinely add up.
Behind our counter are real people. We're a family-run, independent business that took a huge leap to bring a little piece of France to Port Macquarie. 🇫🇷
So if you have cash in your wallet, we'd absolutely love you to use it.
And if you prefer to tap your card? That's absolutely fine too. ❤️
This isn't about telling anyone how they should pay. It's simply about explaining why, for small businesses like ours, cash can make a difference.
However you choose to pay, thank you for walking through our doors, buying a croissant, grabbing a coffee, telling a friend about us and supporting a local small business.
It genuinely means more than you probably realise.
Merci ❤️
