The Great Northern Hotel in Port Lincoln (located at Hallet Place) has been a local fixture since 1866. Starting as the "North Star Hotel," it was renamed the "Great Northern" in 1926. Today, it functions as a popular community hub featuring a bistro, bar, and bottle shop.

At the time of the photo the licensee was hotel founder John Watherstone, who ran the hotel from 1866 to 1872. He then went on to found the Pier Hotel in Moonta Bay.
