Guests are invited to unwind at Curlew’s Lounge with a refreshing Spritz (or local beers & house wine at great prices) and one of the most spectacular sunset settings in Tropical North Queensland. From 4.00 pm to 6.00 pm every day, Sundowners at Thala Beach Nature Reserve offer the ideal way to end the day.

Hidden beneath the canopy of Thala Beach Nature Reserve, one of nature’s most fascinating plants is quietly thriving. 🌿

Balanophora fungosa is a rare parasitic plant that grows within the vine thicket located in the rainforest near the beach, drawing nutrients from the roots of surrounding trees rather than producing its own through photosynthesis. Its unusual, mushroom-like appearance makes it one of the rainforest’s most intriguing discoveries.

It’s another reminder that every walk through the forest reveals something extraordinary. 🍃

A little flash of brilliant blue 💙

One of the smallest kingfishers in Australia, the Little Kingfisher is a beautiful sight at Thala.

Despite its vibrant colours, this elusive bird can be surprisingly difficult to spot as it darts through the forest in search of insects. Guests may be lucky enough to encounter one during the guided nature activities, exploring the amazing wildlife that calls Thala home.

In honour of this remarkable bird and its kingfisher family, one of the secluded bungalows is named the Kingfisher Suite, a fitting tribute to one of Thala’s incredible wildlife encounters.

The forests of Tropical North Queensland contain some incredible species of plants. At Thala, there are so many for guests to see, like this epiphyte clinging to a palm tree near the rock pool.

The staghorn fern thrives in high humidity and warm temperatures, attaching itself to trees without soil.

There are many of these ferns and more incredible species found on Thala’s 145 acre property.

Coconuts 🌴🥥

From a young green coconut filled with refreshing water, to a mature brown nut with thick, rich flesh, every stage of the coconut has its own unique characteristics and uses. It’s one of nature’s most remarkable fruits, providing food, drink, fiber, oil and building materials for tropical communities around the world.

At Thala, guests can discover the fascinating journey of the coconut on our complimentary Coconut Odyssey Tour, scheduled twice a week. Learn how to identify the different stages of growth and uncover the many uses of this incredible palm, whilst gaining a deeper appreciation for one of the tropics’ most iconic plants.

Thala Beach Nature Reserve is proudly home to one of the largest coconut plantations in Australia, with roughly 650 palms. An iconic location prominently positioned on the Captain Cook Highway south of Port Douglas.
