Wildlife Wednesday 🐸🌿

Meet the Green Tree Frog, one of Tropical North Queensland’s most charming little locals!

Recognisable by their bright green skin, golden eyes and large toe pads, these clever climbers can grow up to 11 centimetres long. They spend their days hiding in cool, damp places before emerging at night to search for insects.

Keep your eyes and ears open on warm tropical evenings. You never know who might be hiding among the greenery!

🌿 WILDLIFE WEDNESDAY - The Southern Cassowary

The southern cassowary. One of the most extraordinary animals on earth, and one of Port Douglas's most famous neighbours.

A few things worth knowing:

The cassowary is the third largest bird in the world, standing up to 1.8 metres tall and weighing up to 70kg. It cannot fly. It does not need to. It can run at 50km/h through dense rainforest, jump 1.5 metres from a standing start, and swim across rivers without breaking stride.

That casque on its head? Scientists still debate exactly what it's for. Pushing through thick vegetation, amplifying low-frequency calls, or simply a sign of age and status. The cassowary has been doing this for 60 million years and doesn't particularly care what we think.

There are fewer than 4,000 southern cassowaries left in the wild. Almost all of them live right here in Tropical North Queensland. They are a keystone species, and without them, dozens of rainforest plant species cannot regenerate, because the cassowary is the only animal large enough to digest and disperse their seeds. The rainforest literally needs them.

📍 Where to find them near Port Douglas:

Daintree Rainforest & Cape Tribulation - the highest density of wild cassowaries in Australia. Early morning drives on the Cape Trib road regularly result in roadside sightings. Slow down. They have right of way.

Mossman Gorge - the gorge walking tracks and surrounding rainforest are active cassowary territory. Dawn is your best window.

Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas - if you want a guaranteed encounter, Wildlife Habitat on Port Douglas Road has resident cassowaries you can observe up close. Perfect for families before heading into the wild.

One important note: if you encounter a wild cassowary, keep your distance. They are powerful animals with a dagger-like inner claw up to 12cm long. Observe from where you are. It will move on in its own time.

Wildlife encounters like this one start with the right guide! Our tour desk will find you the best. www.caymanvillas.com.au/tour-desk/

Let's talk about the three-bedroom apartment 🛏️

It's the one families book when they want actual space... not two connecting hotel rooms and a fold-out. Three bedrooms, two bathrooms, full kitchen, laundry, a proper lounge, and a private veranda or balcony. Enough room that everyone can disappear when they need to and come back together when they want to!

Port Douglas is already a great family destination. Having the right base makes it a great family holiday 🌴
