Wall batten or lining board - easy to mix up, but they do very different jobs.

A wall batten is a single finished profile you can use on its own for a clean line, or repeat across a wall to build texture. It's a detail, not a covering.

A lining board features a tongue-and-groove system with no finished edge, made to run continuously from floor to ceiling for a full-height feature.

WB35 and LB35 show this distinction in practice. WB35 anchors a bedroom wall in Three Birds House 12, while LB35 lines a full bathroom vanity wall for Gray & Co.

Texture or coverage - which does your next wall need? 🤔

🛁 Wainscoting isn't just for hallways, dining rooms and living spaces.

It can be just as effective in a bathroom, adding character, texture and architectural detail while creating a more considered, layered look.

Pair a decorative dado rail with inlay moulding to create timeless wainscoting, then finish in a durable satin or semi-gloss paint for a practical, easy-to-maintain result.

✨ Would you use wainscoting in a bathroom?

🎬 Take a walk through Hawthorn House: a reimagining of a near-new home whose interiors hadn't caught up to its ornate exterior.

Upstairs stays bright and open-plan, with IN33 inlay mould and CR64 chair rail providing wainscoting detail that gives scale to the over-height walls.

Downstairs hits a different register: dimmer light and darker-toned wall panelling create a dressier basement built for entertaining. It's the room every guest ends up in by the end of the night!

New from Three Birds Renovations: Maison Soleil ☀️

Sitting on Sydney's North Shore, this light-filled home for a family of five effortlessly blends French Country charm with a Modern Australian POV.

Intrim SK945B complements the home's generous proportions, with 230mm skirting running alongside 135mm architraves throughout, giving the home's stone, marble and timber surfaces something solid to sit above. At that height, the skirting holds its own in a room already rich with texture.

Every designer has had the meeting where a client's Pinterest board and the actual build budget are having two different conversations.

The fix usually isn't talking them out of the look; it's translating it. Which elements of that Insta-perfect kitchen are structural (skirting height, panelling proportion), and which are just styling that can flex later (cushions, art, the coffee table). Managing that distinction early avoids a harder conversation at handover.

How do you talk a client through the gap between the Pinterest board and the finished, lived-in reality? Share your tips below 👇
