CLOSED FRIDAY 9th JAN for the SAFETY of EVERYONE!!!

🚨Montrose — you look to us for information, so we’re going to be blunt.🚨

Please take notice of what is forecast for tomorrow, Friday 9 January.
This is shaping up to be one of the most dangerous fire weather days since Black Summer (2019/20) — and potentially comparable to the Black Saturday fires of 2009.

As it stands: Thursday 8th January - 7:30am

Three Victorian fire districts are forecast to be at Catastrophic fire danger

Central District (including Montrose) is rated EXTREME at the time of posting this message.

This rating may increase as weather conditions are refined.

An Extreme rating means any fire that starts will move quickly, be very difficult to stop, and be EXTREMELY dangerous.

Why tomorrow is such a concern.

Friday has all the conditions we never want to see in a fire season:

Extreme heat — temperatures locally above 40°C

Strong north-westerly winds — 30–50 km/h

A late south-westerly cool change

The heat and wind are obvious dangers — but the cool change is critical.

A cool change can bring dry lightning or storms, which may start new fires.
More importantly, for any fire already burning, a wind change can be catastrophic.

What was previously the flank or side of a fire suddenly becomes the new head of the fire after the change.

Put simply:
A fire that had a 1 km front but had already burned 5 km can suddenly turn into a 5 km-wide fire front after the wind change.

That is why these conditions are so dangerous.

What we need you to do

We need you to take this seriously.
We need you to activate your fire plan.
We need you to leave early.

If you choose to leave, do not return until well after the cool change has passed, and only if it is safe to do so.

VicEmergency app and website

Local emergency and community pages
(Do not rely solely on this page. In an emergency, firefighters will be focused on response. We will update when we can, but it cannot be guaranteed.)

A battery-powered radio in case power or mobile networks fail

This is not about panic.
It’s about recognising the dangers in the forecast, learning from past fire seasons, and making informed decisions early.

We are hoping, really hoping that the predicted conditions don't pan out but we need you to be ready just in case.
Please take the time now to prepare, talk with family and neighbours, and have a clear plan for tomorrow that everyone knows.
