• Mark Hughes, from the Mark Hughes Foundation, dropped in to distribute beanies to our guests, bringing warmth and kindness on a cold day.
• The team at Hunter Financial raised funds through their team-building activities, supporting local community initiatives, including Soul Hub.
• Students from Whitehouse International College visited Soul Hub and generously brought food donations to support our guests.
• Jason playing one of the two guitars he kindly donated, helping bring music and joy to our community.

Volunteering doesn’t just transform Guests lives.

RAYMOND – Calendar Story.
“At Soul they don’t judge ya”

Raymond loves coffee, a joke and driving. He has a Honda CRV, his pride and joy, and he will often set off for a drive with no destination in mind just to enjoy the freedom of driving. He hates tolls! Raymond loves to joke around, which is why he enjoys Soul. At Soul, he has friends like Kym to have a joke with.

Three years ago, Ray was in need and asked around for help. People told him about Soul and he came along to access meals, haircuts and the pantry service. But what Raymond found was more than a meal. He says that it’s the “environment” that keeps him coming back to Soul. “You feel welcome because it's so friendly, that's why you want to keep coming back for a joke and a coffee. They don’t judge ya at Soul. At some places they judge ya and you don’t feel comfortable”.

We love that Raymond feels comfortable at Soul and enjoys our coffee too!

Coffee, sugar and long-life milk can be all it takes to TRANSFORM someone’s day.

Every day at 437 Hunter Street, we welcome guests who arrive feeling cold, tired, isolated, or weighed down by life’s challenges. A short time later, after a hot coffee and a genuine conversation upstairs at Soul Hub, we often see them leave with a smile, a little brighter and a little lighter.

At Soul, we believe we are more than a meal. Sometimes the simple act of sharing a coffee and being treated with dignity and kindness is enough to remind someone that they matter.

People often ask what we need this month. The answer is simple: coffee, sugar and long-life milk are always in demand. These everyday items help create thousands of moments of connection, comfort and hope for Newcastle’s most vulnerable people.

Every donation, no matter how small, adds a little more Soul. And a little bit of Soul can go a very long way.

Donations can be dropped off at Soul Hub, 437 Hunter Street, Newcastle:
Monday to Thursday: 7:00am – 2:00pm
Friday to Sunday: 7:00am – 8:30am

Soul Medical Clinic Story
Twenty-five years ago Soul started with a simple act of generosity.
A coffee. A meal. A conversation.

Since then, we've learned an important lesson. Many of the people who walk through our doors have not failed the system. The system has failed them. And they have fallen through the gaps.

The gaps of society. The gaps between services. The gaps between what people need and what is available.

The Soul Medical Clinic is helping fill that gap between what people need and what is available.
Service delivery March 2025 to June 2026
· 250+ clinic sessions delivered
· 2,431+ GP consultations (3,500+ multidisciplinary appointments)
· 963 guests medically supported
· 792 urgent/same-day appointments
· 30–34% Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander representation amongst clinic guests
· 30% of clinic guests sleep rough

The Soul Medical Clinic is helping fill the gap with expanded preventative health, chronic disease management, nursing-led assessments and point-of-care testing.

Soul Hub is a compassionate community response to a deep community need.

Today, our dining room is full of people, with free hot meals being shared among guests who need them most. Behind every meal is a community that cares.

Over the past week, the Osborn Law Breakfast, UON Medical Students, and EngBall 2026 have raised more than $10,000 to support Soul Hub's work. Their generosity is helping ensure that no one goes without a warm meal and a welcoming place to belong.

Those meals are also made possible by the 63 volunteers rostered on today. Whether preparing food, serving guests, or simply offering a friendly conversation, each volunteer is making a meaningful contribution. The atmosphere is warm, welcoming, and filled with connection.

This is what community looks like.

At Soul everyone who walks through our door is a Guest.

We don’t have clients, customers, participants, service users or patrons. We don’t have homeless people, street people, addicts, users, winos or hobos. We don’t have patients, cases, schizophrenics, acquired brain injuries, alcoholics or anything else. We just have Guests.

Our community life is very simple because if we are not sure what to do with someone we just treat them like a welcome Guest. And for many vulnerable people that alone is transformative.

Many of our vulnerable Guests are experiencing homelessness, housing insecurity, mental unwellness, addiction and/or social isolation. Most are experiencing more than one of those things. Many have fallen through the gaps of society and societies support services.

Realistically, most of our Guests have been dwelling in that gap for 2yrs, 5yrs, 10yrs, 15yrs, …

Our vision for Newcastle is that no one falls through the gaps! Our vision for Newcastle is that no one has to live in The Gap. Since 2003 Soul Hub has provided an island of hope deep in The Gap for Newcastle’s most vulnerable people.
