Ever watch that show Undercover Boss?
The one where the boss of a big organisation with dozens of stores would don a Muppet Show Obvious wig and mix it with the frontline staff? With a full camera crew? To discover shocking things about How The S**z Actually Ran?
I once worked in a large organisation where almost none of the head office staff spent any real time on the shop floor. And if they did, it was because visiting stores was their job. Or they were swinging through as a customer-like observer. No one was compelled to do any real time - multiple hours at a time - as a temporary employee. Serving customers. Experiencing what it was like to actually execute in real life the plans they’d made, the products they’d devised and the systems they’d built.
Which is fine. Plenty of large organisations work that way. And people are busy. And time is short. And corporate deadlines move hard and fast.
But it meant that there was a perpetual invisible disconnect between the customer in the retail spaces, and the people deciding what should be in front of them, and the why it would be landing that way.
That work experience was Building Block Two for Luup. Block One: understanding how women (You! Us! We!) feel and operate in your everyday get-about-and-do-the-things lives. Block Two: being on-hand, in-person to see and feel if what we’ve conjured for you is actually thrilling you like we planned.
(Always tell us if not.)
