Morena Whanau,
I just wanted to share 🥰 You don’t need much space to grow food. This is my balcony. I started my little garden May 1st and it’s really starting to bloom.
Didn’t cost much either. Spent about $200 all up - mainly on soil and manure. I started with a bag of soil and a couple of pots and seedlings. I got sick of buying herbs from Cole’s and them dying in a few days. So I started there.
Over the last few months I’ve been like a magpie - collecting free pots on the side of the road, marketplace and Balgowlah Bunnings has them free in the carpark downstairs.
I got a few seeds, saved kitchen scraps to grow, cuttings and a couple of freebies on fb. Everything is an experiment - if it grows that’s a bonus 👍🏽 I have a worm farm for all of my kitchen scraps to make compost for free.
I become obsessed with garden fb groups and YouTube vids. Instead of mindless scrolling I started learning and planning. It has turned into an addiction 😎 first healthy one I’ve had lol. Digging in dirt really is healing and nourishing for your mind, body and soul. Picking your own Kai to cook is so dam satisfying and the taste is unbelievable! Can’t wait for summer to be picking more than I buy 🥳
Anyway I just thought I’d share and encourage you to plant something. Anything - even if it’s just a pot on the windowsill. It’s so easy and fun. I’ll come back and share my progress for anyone that’s interested. Here is my list so far:
Cos lettuce, rocket, calendula, olive tree🤞🏽marigolds, snow and snap peas, parsley, Silverbeet, kumara, rosemary, potatoes, passionfruit, pansies, aloe, borage, oregano, thyme, basil, coriander, Italian parsley, sage, dragonfruit, lemon verbena, strawberries, chives, mint, Vietnamese mint, spearmint capsicum, garlic, tomatoes, dill, watercress and gooseberry
