About the photographer..
Kev McGennan first visited Nepal in 1987 with a group from Wangaratta High School. Like most people he was drawn to the prospect of walking below the summits of the highest mountains in the world. But once there, it was the people and the culture that won his heart. And yes, the mountains were spectacular. He’s now been back 12 times, 10 of those times with Wang High.
This image was taken on January 4, 2019, from a place called Mohare Danda. Located at 3300m, it’s about a three hour trek from P**n Hill, a well known vantage point above the village of Ghorepani. January is mid winter in Nepal, it was a bitterly cold morning and there was light dusting of snow overnight which can be faintly seen in the foreground trees.
Our leader on this trek was Tsering Lama. Tsering has suffered massive family loss as a result of the tragic events on August 26.

PS Kev was my photography/ODE teacher at the wang high and I also travelled as one of his students to Nepal in 1990. He is an extremely talented photographer and passionate adventurer. 💚

Eighteen months ago, eleven of us from Australia travelled from Kathmandu along a simply made, extremely rough and very treacherous road into the Lhende Khola Valley. Everyone was very excited about the langtang trek we were about to undertake. Single lanes in most places, trucks, scooters, pushbikes, road workers and people carrying large loads negotiating the roads. Making the driving skills required to navigate these roads astounding and terrifying. The remoteness of this area is hard to explain. Travel time was slow, crossing the rivers over low bridges and passing through small villages lining the banks of the river, kids out playing and simple farmers cultivating the rich soil to feed their families. Nine hours to the small village of Syrabubesi. Here streets are lined with shops selling their goods to the tourists and the locals. It’s a bustling little town with people going about their daily business, a namaste and a warm smile from them as we walk past. They are the friendliest people on earth, living a simple life. Our guides are greeted warmly as they are also from this area they have family and many friends here.

This place I will never forget, as of two days ago most of it is gone and all those people either gone or left with nothing. My heart breaks💔

What can we do to help?

We have a planned trip back to Nepal in November trekking the Manaslu circuit. I am hoping to raise some funds for my friends and their families in syrabubesi. I will take the money straight to my friends in Kathmandu and they will distribute it directly where it is needed.

I am donating 50c of every coffee sold in that time until we leave in November. If you have spare cash you can donate, drop it into the cafe.

Thankyou
