Hymenosporum flavum - Native Frangipani grows as a neat tree that stays relatively narrow but is tall enough to provide light screen. It has broad, glossy, lime-green leaves, a slender trunk(s), then provides some light screening above, but without shutting out light and without the risk developing a wide, troublesome, overhanging canopy.
It is perfect for a narrow space down the side of the house, is happy in shade but doesn’t mind some sun once it grows taller and is fast growing if given some moisture while it’s a baby. Happy in a range of soils, doesn’t mind sandy soils, it is moderately lime-tolerant and doesn’t mind light frosts.
Best of all, at this time of the year, showy clusters of large, white, highly scented flowers slowly turn to a deep yellow-gold. There’s a bush shrub form as well and both are deserving of a place in the garden.
