Since we first aired ‘Every Cup Counts’ in 2023, commodity coffee more than doubled, hitting an all time high of over $4USD/lb in 2025. Even then, it was still a fraction of its 1970s price adjusted for inflation. Since then prices have trended down, and we can’t help but notice a lot of roasters and cafes sighing a breath of relief. But that just puts us back where we started. One or two good years isn’t enough for a farmer to build a long term viable business.

So what’s the alternative? Pay the price the farmer actually needs. Not just enough to cover cost of production, but enough to turn a profit, and reinvest for the future. We call this partnership coffee. Really it’s just how coffee should work when everyone in the value chain gets fair value.

Since we released Every Cup Counts, our documentary on the story of Zukuka Bora, back in 2023, the commodity coffee market has more than doubled. It hit record highs of over $4 USD a pound last year.

That’s still short of $12 USD a pound, the inflation-adjusted price coffee traded at in the 1970s. And it’s already dropping back again.

We hear the same conversation on repeat. Coffee’s too expensive. Coffee’s overvalued. Prices have gone mad.

Meanwhile we’re still paying less for it than we were fifty years ago. The people growing it have spent decades being paid as though time stood still. So maybe the real question isn’t why coffee costs $6 a cup. Maybe it’s why we ever expected it to stay so cheap for so long.
