Morning tea weather on the verandah. Freshly baked Scones with Jam and Cream, thick slices of Banana Bread, a pot of tea or your favourite coffee, and the rainforest just beyond the railing.

If the mountain air turns a little cool, we have blankets rolled and waiting by the door.

Bring Mum, your daughter or a dear friend. There’s always time for a good catch-up at our table.

Next time you’re inside, look up.

There’s a row of faces under the leadlight windows, looking back at you from gilt frames. Keep going around the room and the scenes get quieter: a girl carrying a bucket across a red paddock, a rooster up on a stump, a family standing with their horse.

Most people come for the view, and fair enough. This room has a few details of its own, though. They’re worth a slow look between coffees.

Leave Brisbane early enough and you’ll reach the range while the air’s still cold.

Breakfast now finishes at 11am, so the earlier you’re up the hill, the longer you get on the verandah with a second coffee and nowhere else to be.

The view waits all day. Breakfast doesn’t.

We’re pouring Humbler by Proud Mary Coffee. Rich, syrupy and sweet, with notes of chocolate fudge brownie, caramel and date.

Every cup is brewed with water drawn from the natural spring beneath our building. Take yours inside among the leadlight, or out on the balcony where the Blackall Range falls away towards the coast.

Coffee tastes particularly good up here in Montville.

Eggs, crisp rashers of bacon and toast, with all the trimmings alongside. The Big Breakfast is the slow way into a Sunday, best with your favourite coffee and a table where the range falls away to the coast.

We serve breakfast on weekends from 8:30am until 11am, so it’s worth setting out early and taking the long way up through the hinterland.
