There’s something special about watching dads and their kids spend time together under the elm tree — playing a game, reading a book, sharing a coffee, or simply being together.

It’s often the ordinary moments that become the memories we treasure most.

Father’s Day is also a chance to acknowledge the mentors, grandads, uncles, family friends and good men who step up, guide, encourage and show up in ways that matter more than they may ever realise.

And for those of us whose dads are no longer here, it can be a day of remembering too.

So here’s to the dads we can still make memories with, the men who choose to be there, and the dads we carry with us always. 🤍

These barely make it onto the tray before they start disappearing. 😂

Pear, dark chocolate & raspberry muffins — rich, fudgy, fruity and best grabbed while they’re still warm.

And of course, a little taste test from our gorgeous friend G from Country G**s had to happen. Ooh là là. ✨

If you see them in the morning, don’t wait — they fly off the shelf.

If you still think gluten-free means dry, bland or disappointing, I’d really like to change your mind.

Because that old stereotype is still hanging around — and it doesn’t look anything like what we’re creating at Kindred.

From this tiny coffee van comes a pretty ridiculous range of small-batch cakes, muffins, brownies and slices, all made with real fruit, nuts, chocolate, spice, citrus, curds, pralines and plenty of texture.

The goal has never been “good for gluten-free.”

It has to be moist, indulgent, full of flavour and something you’d choose because it looks and tastes genuinely good.

Whether you need gluten-free or dairy-free or not.

Because maybe gluten-free isn’t what you remember — maybe you just haven’t tried the right cake yet.

Things that keep me awake at night as a small business owner, solo parent and coffee van operator.

Not the economy. We all know that’s a disaster.

I mean the other stuff.

Rain on the roof at 2am and immediately reshuffling tomorrow’s prep, orders and stock in my head before I’ve even opened my eyes properly.

A generator, pump, fridge, coffee machine or car making a sound it absolutely did not make yesterday.

“Mum, I forgot to tell you…” usually followed by something involving school, sport, an excursion or a note that needs signing. Most cost money, need my immediate attention, and are delivered as he’s ready to skip off to school while I’ve got a crowd of customers waiting.

Wondering whether tomorrow’s trade will be completely frantic or dead quiet.

And, of course, spending far too long at 11pm overthinking a social media Reel that absolutely does not deserve that level of attention… when I need to be awake at 5am to open the van by 7.

Three years of running Kindred Coffee has taught me that most things can be fixed, worked around or approached differently when Plan A inevitably decides not to cooperate.

It’s also taught me that owning a small business requires a very strong — and slightly bizarre — collection of skills I never realised I’d need.

Barista. Meteorologist. Part-time engineer. Content creator. Logistics coordinator. Troubleshooter. Counsellor. Cleaner. Buyer. Bookkeeper. Problem solver.

The list keeps growing.

And somehow, I love the chaos of it all. The unpredictability, the problem-solving, the ridiculous moments, the constant juggling and the fact that no two days ever really look the same.

It’s messy, exhausting, funny and completely mine.

And I genuinely wouldn’t change it for the world.

HOOMANS, this is an excellent café to bring you to.

You get coffee. We get puppuccinos.

And if we sit nicely and keep an eye on the lady behind the coffee machine, treats occasionally fly out the window.

Would recommend. 🐾

Meet your new obsession: Dubai Choc Jaffle — $9.95 🍓💚🍫
Strawberries, creamy pistachio and rich chocolate, toasted until golden and gooey. Different, decadent and dangerously addictive.

Three years ago today, on 14 August 2023, Kindred Coffee @ Milton officially began.

It started in a little kiosk in the Kindred complex in Milton, at a time when my son and I were starting life over again.

I had never used a commercial coffee machine before. I wasn’t a barista, and I certainly wasn’t a baker.

Three years later, so much has changed. I’ve learned, grown and lost — and some of those losses have been far greater than anything tangible. I’ve rebuilt, made some very brave decisions, and met some truly wonderful people along the way.

And I know, without question, I would not be where I am today without many of those people beside me.

Kindred has grown with me.

What I’m most grateful for is the community that has grown around it.

Strangers stop for a coffee, become customers, become familiar faces and, very often, become friends. There is something really special about watching that happen every day.

So today is simply a very big thank you to this community, and to everyone who has been part of these first three years.

Three years of Kindred Coffee. 🤍

And I’m really excited about where we go from here.

P.S. We’ll be celebrating properly in early September, when our coffee van turns two.

❤️
