On behalf of the Ajantha team, we wanted to say a big thank you for all your support on Mothers’ Day last weekend, and have decided to donate a percentage of everyone’s bill to the Catherine Hamlin Fistula Foundation.
Obstetric fistula is a medical condition, caused by an obstructed labour during childbirth, which leaves a hole in the birth canal - this usually needs to be repaired surgically. In Australia, obstetric fistula is not commonly seen due to our access to maternal healthcare. However in countries like Ethiopia, where maternal healthcare is not accessible to all - a great majority of births occur in the absence of a nurse or doctor, and in turn, every year, many mothers experience excruciating internal injury, experiencing an incredibly painful obstructed labour, lasting many days, often giving birth to a stillborn baby.
So, in celebration of all the mothers who do so much for us all, we’ve collectively been able to fund one standard fistula operation in a Hamlin regional hospital which costs $700 - this will provide a life-changing treatment to a mother in Ethiopia.
