Tony Yang .yang.guitar is a Melbourne-based jazz guitarist and a Jazz and Improvisation student at the Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne. A graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School, he has studied with leading musicians including James Sherlock and Mike Moreno, and regularly travels to New York to further immerse himself in the jazz tradition.

Joined by bassist .rank Charlie Rank and drummer Zayne Guo, this trio explores the music of Wes Montgomery, focusing on selections from Montgomery’s iconic Riverside recordings of the 1960s. Featuring classic tunes such as Four on Six, West Coast Blues, Full House, and Cariba alongside beloved jazz standards from his repertoire, the trio celebrates Montgomery‘s unmistakable blend of blues, bebop, and soulful lyricism while bringing their own contemporary perspective to these timeless works.

EARLY BIRDS QUARTET

Early Birds Quartet is a Melbourne-based ensemble exploring the intersection of modern jazz, groove and improvisation. Drawing inspiration from artists such as Robert Glasper, Yussef Dayes, Alfa Mist and Brad Mehldau, the quartet blends contemporary harmony with rhythmic freedom, creating music that is both intimate and forward-looking.

Rather than recreating standards, Early Birds approaches each performance as a conversation—where composition, interaction and spontaneous improvisation shape the music in real time. Every set is different, driven by listening, curiosity and the energy of the room.

CONTEMPORARY JAZZ

We’re excited to welcome to the next edition of SOUND SAMPLE.

Triveni Quartet is a Melbourne-based ensemble centred around original compositions and improvisation. Their music grows from deep listening—where compositions provide a starting point, but every performance becomes something unique.

Inspired by contemporary jazz, cinematic soundscapes, groove-based improvisation and ambient textures, the quartet creates music that is both intimate and unpredictable.

SOUND SAMPLE is more than a gig.

It’s an ongoing live recording series dedicated to documenting original music in its most honest form. Every session is performed in front of a small audience and captured live—preserving the conversations, the risks, and the moments that only happen once.

If you love discovering artists before everyone else, and experiencing music the way it was meant to be heard, this is for you.
