From IT Worker to Pie Champion: Cambodian-Born Baker Wins Australia's Best Pie for Fifth Time
PHNOM PENH, July 11, 2026 – A Cambodian-born baker who had never tasted a pie before arriving in Australia has won the country's best pie competition for the fifth time in eight years, according to a report by The Guardian.
Ryan Khun, who moved to Australia from Phnom Penh in 2012 at the age of 27, now runs Country Cob Bakery in Melbourne's south-east. His winning entry this year was a Malaysian-style prawn curry pie, featuring coconut-poached prawns with galangal, lemongrass, chilli, and ginger.
Khun initially struggled to find work in his IT field after arriving in Australia. He joined his brother Chan at a bakery in Kyneton, working midnight shifts rolling out dough. The brothers started baking their own pies after being dissatisfied with the quality of third-party suppliers.
Their first original recipe was a garlic prawn pie, and in 2018 they won their first BAA best overall pie award with a satay fish entry. They have since won with a caramelised pork and pepper pie inspired by the Cambodian dish kaw sach chrouk, and a fish amok filling.
Today, Country Cob produces more than 10,000 pies a week across three stores and a production kitchen.
"I never thought I would be baking," Khun said. "I enjoy making pies and making everyone happy when they enjoy the pie."
